This is my Now page. It’s about what I’m doing at the moment and where my attention is focused.
Most days I’m focused on my day job as CTO at Energy Sparks, which is a charity that supports schools in being more energy efficient.
That means thinking about:
- What issues we need to fix today, and what problems can wait until tomorrow or later?
- How can we best analyse energy data in ways that we can use to provide actionable advice to users?
- How can we present data as charts, tables or other content that is accessible to a wide range of users?
- How do we scale the service so we could potentially support every school in the UK?
- How can I help to develop the skills of my team so we can maintain the service effectively?
- How do we work as a team to build a sustainable product?
Outside of work I remain deeply interested in working in the open, open data, data infrastructure and related topics. I continue to research and explore those ideas.
Right now, that means:
- What are the current trends around publishing, accessing and using data?
- How can we map data ecosystems?
- How is the UK’s energy data infrastructure evolving? How might it be improved to help support more services like Energy Sparks?
- How can we assess data infrastructure to understand whether its trustworthy, well-governed and sustainable?
- Understanding how to build sustainable data infrastructure that can maximise the value of data whilst minimising its harmful impacts
- Reflecting on what “open” and how that concept may need to evolve based on the current state of the web, evolution of AI and a range of other factors including the need to ensure equity and inclusion in those processes
